Bourbon French Parfums was founded in 1843 by August Doussan. Arriving in New Orleans, Louisiana from France, Doussan established his perfumery in the historic Vieux Carré (better known as the French Quarter) and began creating fragrances for New Orleans' wealthiest families. One of the earliest fragrances developed by Doussan, Kus Kus, was launched in 1843 and is still a best-seller for the house. Doussan took a business partner, J.H. Tindel, a young chemist who had studied perfumery while in Europe, and changed the store's name to Bourbon French Perfume Company.
