Pierre Cardin is an Italian-born French fashion designer who gained fame for his futuristic fashions in the 1950s and 1960s. Originally studying architecture, Cardin came to Paris in 1945 and worked for Jeanne Paquin and Elsa Schiaparelli before joining the new house of Christian Dior. He remained there until 1950, when he left to begin his own fashion house. Some of Cardin's earliest designs include costumes for films by Jean Cocteau, as well as for theatrical productions. His first women's wear collection was shown in 1953, and the popularity of his "bubble dress" design enabled him to open his first women's boutique in 1954.
