Elsa Schiaparelli (1890–1973) was an Italian-born fashion designer, famous as a provocative couturier inspired by Surrealists like Salvador Dali and Alberto Giacometti. She moved to Paris and opened her first boutique in the late 1920s. Her first collection of knitwear with graphic “deceive the eye” motives was presented in 1927. In 1931, she added evening wear to her fashion collection and, later on, the shop was moved from Rue de la Paix to the “Schiap Shop” in the Place Vendôme. She is also famous for the use of bold colors, such as iced blue and hot pink, for her tall hat designed as a shoe, for padded shoulders on female suits.
